The mechanics of manThe first complete exhibit of Leonardo da Vinci’s Anatomical Manuscipt A (1510-11) is showing at the Vancouver Art Gallery in British Columbia until May 2. The 18 linen folio pages feature 34 pen-and-ink drawings of the structures of the body and the movements of musculature, surrounded by notes in his trademark mirror writing. The drawings are remarkable artistically and scientifically, but also historically: In 1510, the body was largely unknown and unmapped. Full article

Seeking a new life in cyberspaceWhat if you could leave a broken body and craft a brand new frame and life in cyberspace? This, and related questions about the nature of disability and ability, are posed in the new play Spine, on from Mar. 10 to Mar. 20 in Vancouver, BC. The play centres on James, who suffers from quadriplegia, and his decision to escape online through an avatar at Second Life. But he finds cyberspace isn’t everything he’d hoped for. Full article

Increasingly, artists are using various forms of diagnostic imaging to create art. A group of medical students at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, recently made 12 stained glass depictions of positron emission tomography scans of the brain in various states of health and disease.
